Regarding the Face

The portrait goes beyond the individual – even when the sitter is famous, a fact often overlooked in a world obsessed with celebrity. ‘…the mystery of painting…is how can appearance be made? I know it can be illustrated, I know it can be photographed. But how can… you catch the mystery of appearance within the mystery of making?’ Francis Bacon.

These images look both to a sensibility and a sense of history. The intensity of the studio spills into these deeply articulate compositions of the head; images found in translation from feeling to form.

These contemporary portraits draw on the expressive potential of the face, with influences as diverse as Byzantine icon painting, German Expressionism and the French Fauve movement.
